Southwestern Pennsylvania Legal Services
Mission
To stabilize and improve the families, housing, and finances of low-income and other vulnerable Southwestern Pennsylvania residents through legal advice, representation, and other assistance.
Programs and Services
- Priority one: Domestic violence. We represent petitioners for civil protection orders pursuant to the Protection From Abuse Act and the Protection From Sexual Violence and Intimidation Act. We also advocate for such victims and offer them legal tools to protect themselves and/or their children, in coordination with criminal law enforcement and domestic violence social services.
- Priority two: Families. We primarily advise and represent parents in matters ranging from child custody or visitation and support to juvenile dependency with Children and Youth Services. We seek family unity where possible by mediating agreements, litigating, or offering legal advice about parental rights. We also help low-income, no-asset divorce litigants through the process.
- Priority three: Housing. We advise and represent renters and home owners on a variety of housing matters pursuant to the Landlord and Tenant Act and Manufactured (mobile) Homes Community Rights Act, along with laws and procedures related to mortgage foreclosure. We strive to keep people in their homes with basic health and safety conditions. We also protect residents from discrimination under the Fair Housing Act.
- Priority four: Economic security. We provide a wide range of services to boost clients' incomes and relieve their debt, including: removing employment barriers related to prior records; disability rights; unemployment compensation; debtor protection and relief; and public assistance, such as Medicaid. Our goals are for workers to improve their incomes, the disabled to receive available public assistance, and those in debt to remain secure in their housing and finances.
