Mission

The mission of the American Diabetes Association is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

Programs and Services

  • The American Diabetes Association (ADA) relentlessly combats diabetes, aiming to prevent and cure the disease, as well as to enhance the lives of the more than 38 million children and adults in the U.S. living with diabetes. We also work to bend the curve on this rapidly growing epidemic, for the 97.6 million Americans with prediabetes who are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. With more than 133 million Americans impacted, including over a million in Pennsylvania, our urgent vision strives for a diabetes-free existence.
  • American Diabetes Association (ADA) Camp: More than 18,000 youth are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes every year, a life-changing moment that requires 24/7 control for the rest of their lives. ADA Camp offers a traditional summer camp experience in a medically-safe environment where they learn critical diabetes management skills, while creating opportunities for children with diabetes to overcome feelings of isolation, and gain self-confidence in their diabetes care. Locally, Camp Courage is offered as a week-long, sleep-away camp in Somerset County. Nearly 100 local children ages 8 to 17, including children from Westmoreland County, attend the camp yearly.
  • Project Power: Project Power is a program offered to children ages 5 to 12 to help slow the trajectory of childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes. Using an outcomes-based curriculum, the no-cost program promotes making healthy food choices, increasing physical activity, and building family and peer support. The program is delivered in school or with a community partner. (1 in 5 children in the US is affected by obesity.)
  • Research: Science and research are at the heart of everything we do. Each finding deepens our understanding of diabetes and its complications. The ADA’s research program has been the engine that cultivates brilliant scientists, drives forward discoveries, and turns them into clinical practice. We have committed more than $955 million in diabetes research since 1952. Scientific research also drives our updates to the Standards of Care publication, the ADA’s trusted publication that distills the latest research and best practices for health care professionals so they can provide the very best level of care to people with and at risk for diabetes.
  • Advocacy: From Capitol Hill to state capitals across the country, our Diabetes Advocates devote their efforts to supporting and advancing critical ADA-sponsored legislation and diabetes prevention policies. United in a common goal against the pervasive disease, the ADA continues to work endlessly to implement impactful policy reforms aimed towards bending the curve and promoting a healthier future for the diabetes community. We're proud to have achieved $35 insulin caps in 26 stats and counting, and have addressed more than 25,000 cases of diabetes discrimination.
